Gracious Oasis began in honor of the legacy of Grace Asuquo Attah. In the late 1970s Grace emigrated to the United States and began her family. She would eventually enter the cosmetology and health professions. All the while, Grace had an affinity towards childcare, and often assisted newly emigrated mothers in caring for their children while they attended school or went to work. Although she did not attend college, she was a true example of leadership and a proponent of girls empowerment through education. Mrs. Attah had the expectation that all of her children and their friends would go on to universities and significantly impact the world. She never wanted them to struggle in poverty, experience lack of healthcare, or encounter other forms of oppression.
In July 2010, Grace's life was cut short in a car accident involving a driver intoxicated by alcohol and drugs. Although physically absent, her spirit lives on and her work continues in all of the lives she touched and left behind.
